Review:

This is a great role model heroine, yes is strong and kicked butt. I love the her smart mouth and take no prisoners. I found this book very refreshing to see heroine not holding back to what was on her mind. She was very Modern.

The is a werewolf story, what a wonderful surprise of having vampires and fae.

Very humorous fast-paced tale looking forward to the the next book.

She back….loud, sarcastic, and aggressive. I just love her vocabulary. Okay, the story pick up where the previous book left off. Now our beautiful heroine learns the world as she know it will ever be change. It’s very supernaturals.

I loved the humor so much which I was laughing out loud. I must say, this book has great villains. A great non-stop action from beginning to end.

Description:

Notthingham suffers under the ruthless enforcement of the Sheriff, who is determined to live up to his title and forget the difficult childhood that left him orphaned and destitute.

Then a charismatic bandit named Robin Hood crashes through his bedroom window and leaves the Sheriff’s ordered world thoroughly shattered—and threatens to steal the Sheriff’s not so hardened heart.

Excerpt:

The Sheriff knew an old trick of thieving, from back when he used to steal fine ladies’ purses and men’s gold coin and knives and would bring the spoils back to his mother. He never did forget the sleight of hand, clean as he was all those years later. It was how he stole a single arrow from the merchant.

The Sheriff kept the arrow. He broke it in half and kept the fletched end in an inner pocket that he sometimes opened and touched like a flower with his index finger. He left off the enforcing and let Guy of Gisborne police the forests where the King’s deer were recklessly poached. The Sheriff wasted away in his room while ’round him traipsed the servants and the cooks and the foresters.

The Abbot interrupted his melancholia, came to him with vicious complaints and demands that the scoundrel known as Robin Hood be stopped and put down like a dog. Did the Sheriff not know the villain had taken the donations to the monastery and made off with them in the night? Did the Sheriff not trouble himself that Robin Hood and his ilk of worthless peasants made off with the casks of ale from the widow’s brewery?

The Sheriff listened and acknowledged each grievance delivered.

When the Abbot left, the Sheriff rode out on patrol. He stopped at the edge of the forest and turned the arrow shaft ’round and ’round in his hands until he could evade his responsibilities no longer.

At night he slept uneasy, in patches. The Sheriff counted the hours by the light of his candle from nightfall until dawn. Between one dream and another, scurrying rats made passes through the room until he roused himself and rubbed his face. He half-heard bare toes on the chill stone floor through his slumber and thought it a dream. The fire in the hearth burned down low before fizzling out and left the room desolate, shadows concealing cups of the previous night’s ale turned on their sides.

Unable to return to uneasy sleep, the Sheriff took the ewer by the bed and splashed his face with water. A rat in the darkness started in terror, overturned the chair in the corner, and brought crashing down with it the vase and the curtain by the side of his bed.

A very large rat, noted the Sheriff, who looked down at the rubble and saw the noisy and clumsy “rat” infesting his bedroom was not a rat at all, and heard the merchant’s voice, echoing in his head:

For ‘im in the green. Robin ‘ood.

Robin resolved from the darkness. Spilled water and shattered remnants of jagged vase crunched beneath his scrambling feet. He put the Sheriff in mind of a cat who falls inelegantly and then pretends his stumble was part of his design, and stifled the urge to laugh. Robin seemed ten years the Sheriff’s junior, face streaked with charcoal and blackening his full, wide lips and the divot leading up to a delicate nose. Haphazard dark hair escaped from beneath his green cap, studded with feathers and leaves. Robin clumsily faced him to brandish his blade, the action both ridiculous and deadly serious.

“Your money,” Robin demanded.

“You intend to rob me? In my own room?”

“You would prefer to be robbed in a more luxurious setting? Come now. Be quick about it.”

The Sheriff turned away, detected the patter of Robin’s bare feet, felt the tip of the blade pressed to his spine in a cold button of metal. The candle flickered and cast their shadows against the opposing wall. The Sheriff moved to comply, propping open his cedar chest at the foot of his bed, and drew aside the linens and the shirts until he found an old moth-eaten cloak from his younger days.

“What have you there?” Robin muttered.

The Sheriff yanked out a blanket and whipped it ’round to smack Robin’s sword out of alignment. The blade refracted light in a wild arc as Robin spun with the force. The Sheriff pirouetted out of reach, wrapping his arm in the blanket to provide him with makeshift armor.

Robin’s face twisted and then he tracked the blade to the Sheriff, but the Sheriff had spent his youth in taverns and living on scraps beneath the tables of kicking feet and murderous bandits and he had learned the art of fighting unarmed against blades. With his bandaged arm, he parried Robin’s weapon and then leaned forward to rake at it with the cloth in his other fist, yanking it out of Robin’s grasp.

Robin stood with his hands empty and his mouth parted and his eyes wide.

Hoping to not be discovered by her father’s courtiers, Aurelia tries to remain hidden under her new false identity. Unexpected love is challenged between Aurelia and Prince Klaus with an approaching arranged marriage between the heir of Saarland der Licht and the neighboring ruler’s daughter. With danger and heartache hanging in the air, Aurelia must face the troubles of her past and her fears for the future in her journey of self-discovery.

Based on the Grimm Brothers’ Fairy Tale “Allerleirauh.”

Excerpt:

“Have you forgotten your mother’s last wish? I promised her I would marry someone as beautiful as she. You’re the only one who has the same golden hair, the same smile, the same beautiful eyes. You are the only one who will do, who I can love. The only one worthy of my love, my power, my body. You will be my bride,” he declared as he ran a finger through my hair.

My teeth clenched at his touch. The only thing keeping me in the room was the new plan wheeling through my mind. Perhaps it would be clever enough to save me from this fate. I could not live this life with him. I would rather die.

“If I am to marry you,” I began softly, letting out a deep breath. “I have four simple requests.”

My father grinned and nodded, “Go on…anything.”

It was clear he underestimated me by way of his confident sneer. The way he stared down his nose at me, he anticipated my requests to be silly and pedantic. I unclenched my white fingers and licked my bottom lip.

“For our marriage to be arranged, I will require new gowns. I request three. The first, made and spun from the rays of sunbeams.  The second, silver and made from the full moon’s light. And the third, woven from the star dust that falls from the heavens.”

My father’s face contorted with question and he puffed himself up, but continued to listen.

“My last request,” I continued, “A fur coat made from all the kingdom’s wild animals, so when the harsh winters come, I can keep sickness and death at bay.”

I could feel my hands tremble from my trepidation. I couldn’t believe I had actually made such ambitious demands—things truly impossible. What would the people think once they heard of the kind, my father, going to these magnificent lengths to marry me? Would they think I was a harlot? Would they think I encouraged my father’s behavior? My stomach knotted.

“And this is all you request from me?” he asked with his eyebrows lifted.

I could see the amusement light up his face. As my throat constricted, I slowly nodded to him.

Maybe this would actually work. Perhaps he would not see through my deceptiveness and agree. If he did, this would grant me more time to collect my chattels, arrange an escape from the palace, and move forward with my plans. I would never again be Princess Aurelia, but I would avoid a future most grim and contemptible.

Review:

I have not read the two prequel novels, which did leave me feeling a few times like I was missing something, but with the way this is written I was still able to follow the story. There was danger from more than just the cold.  Petra and Gabe have discovered that the police won’t be able to help out with who is killing wolves and decide to take on Skinflint Jack all on their own.  There is alchemy and shape shifting of a sort.  This story delves into the past with origins in old stories and myth brought into reality.  I had the vibe of sadness through most of this read.  There were a few happy moments and laughter with the interactions between Petra and Sig.

Description:

Following on the heels of her critically acclaimed prequel novels Dark Alchemy and Mercury Retrograde comes the first installment in Laura Bickle’s dark contemporary fantasy series, Nine of Stars, a Wildlands Novel

Winter has always been a deadly season in Temperance, but this time, there’s more to fear than just the cold…

As the daughter of an alchemist, Petra Dee has faced all manner of occult horrors—especially since her arrival in the small town of Temperance, Wyoming. But she can’t explain the creature now stalking the backcountry of Yellowstone, butchering wolves and leaving only their skins behind in the snow. Rumors surface of the return of Skinflint Jack, a nineteenth-century wraith that kills in fulfillment of an ancient bargain.

The new sheriff in town, Owen Rutherford, isn’t helping matters. He’s a dangerously haunted man on the trail of both an unsolved case and a fresh kill—a bizarre murder leading him right to Petra’s partner Gabriel. And while Gabe once had little to fear from the mortal world, he’s all too human now. This time, when violence hits close to home, there are no magical solutions.

It’s up to Petra and her coyote sidekick Sig to get ahead of both Owen and the unnatural being hunting them all—before the trail turns deathly cold.

Excerpt:

He’d run as far as he could, into the summer grass that came up almost to his chest. He fantasized for a brief moment about what it would be like to hide in this grass, to build a fort and live among the cows and the ravens that always seemed to mass over the land in swarms, like flies.

He crouched in the grass, making a nest. No one could see him here. He could be out here forever, and no one would ever find him. This world of sunshine and grass and sky would be far preferable to dealing with Sal’s petulant wrath and the anger of his aunt and uncle, who treated Sal like he was the heir to the universe, a young King Arthur wielding a Popsicle stick.

Maybe he was. Owen remembered peering through the grass walls of his hideout into the valley below, at all the vast land and green and gold. He felt a pang of jealousy, but then he saw it.

Something weird.

A man walked along a beaten-down path in the grass along a barbed-wire fence. He looked odd—like he had no arms. The sleeves of his plaid shirt hung at his sides like wet laundry, and he trudged along, looking up at the sky. Ravens swarmed overhead in a seething mass, cawing.

And then Owen saw them dive toward the man.

Owen gasped and clapped his hand over his mouth. The ravens were about to attack that poor crippled man, were going to tear him apart. He crawled forward out of his nest, terrified but compelled to watch.

The ravens slammed into the man, a dozen of them, one after the other, whacking into his body from the front and back. The man stumbled in the flurry of feathers, turning like a scarecrow in a storm as they assaulted him. But that was the funny thing—they didn’t bounce off with chunks of meat in their beaks. They just . . . disappeared.

The man staggered upright, surrounded by a miasma of dust and a few feathers. With a start, Owen realized that his arms had grown back. They’d grown right down past his sleeves, with pale hands that opened and closed.

Owen squeaked.

As if he heard him, the man in the field turned toward Owen with a black and distant gaze.

Owen scuttled backward in the grass, clawing through the stems, and scrambled to his feet. Keeping his head down, he ran as fast as he could back toward the house. His aunt and uncle’s punishment were nothing compared to . . . to that. Whatever that was.

Description:

Having time travelers in your life isn’t always easy. Given that he’s said goodbye to several of them over the past few years, Sean O’Conner knows that better than most. Now his best friend Megan has returned from tenth-century Scandinavia to modern day Maine. Not only has she aged over twenty-five years, she hasn’t traveled through time alone. Her troublesome daughter Svala is with her.

Of dragon blood and proud to be Viking, Svala Sigdir has no use for the twenty-first century and makes it evident to all around her. Even so, she will protect her mother at all cost. Meanwhile, she needs a man. Sean to be exact. Despite his aversion, she is determined to make him hers.

Svala might be after him, but Sean wants nothing to do with her. At least that’s what he tells himself as the holidays arrive and he struggles to keep peace in what’s become a battleground instead of a festive Winter Harbor home. At his wit’s end, he finally calls on an old friend’s help. Or so he had hoped. Cast beneath the spell of a powerful Scottish wizard determined to protect his Viking Ancestors, Sean and Svala go on an unexpected yuletide journey. As it turns out, there’s only one way to break free from the spell. A life-altering choice that might very well cost Sean both his sanity and his heart.

a-viking-holiday-banner-851-x-315

Excerpt:

Svala wrapped her fur cloak around her shoulders and started to breeze past them as she eyed his crew mate. “So you’re New England’s finest, are you?”

“Naw.” Nick chuckled and nodded at Sean. “Most ladies think he is.”

“Hmm, I’m not sure about that,” she said before she started down the hallway.

“I don’t think so.” Sean grabbed her wrist and stopped her. “Nick, go make sure none of the guys head this way. Tell them I’m catching a rat or something.”

Svala winked. “Or a dragon.”

“Where you gonna hide her, Cap?” Nick kept grinning. “She don’t look like the type of woman who’ll keep hidden if she’s decided otherwise.”

Svala cocked a grin at Nick. “I think I like you.”

“I know I like you, beautiful,” he returned.

“Just make sure no one heads this way, Nick,” Sean reiterated. “And I’ll make sure Svala stays hidden.”

“I betcha will.” Nick chuckled as Sean pulled her toward the meager sleeping quarters.

“I am not staying down here.” Svala started to fight him. “I want to be on deck. I want to help you fish.”

“Hell, no.” Sean grabbed her before she could bolt in the opposite direction. “My men won’t be able to concentrate on work with you around.”

Her eyes met his. “Then you must not lead them well if they are so easily distracted.”

It felt as if the narrow hallway only grew smaller as her eyes pinned his…as he remembered with vivid clarity how she’d felt against him last night. “You know damn well the effect you have on men.”

“I did not dress in modern day clothes.” She pulled the cloak off her shoulders. “See, I am dressed like a Viking again.”

His eyes fell to the fur-trimmed, leather tunic. To her unmistakable curves. He swallowed and tore his eyes away. “What difference does it make? You’re still trouble.”

“Only when I dress like a modern-day woman, yes?” Svala cocked her head. “That is why you fought for me last night, is it not? Because you desired me in those clothes?” She frowned. “Now I am not wearing them. You will not desire me so they won’t either. There will be no trouble. You will not be ashamed of yourself.”

Sean had no idea what to make of her logic. “I’m not ashamed of myself.” But he had been when he overreacted last night. “And trust me, sweetheart, it doesn’t matter what you’re wearing. You’re gonna distract my men.”

She didn’t press closer, but her words made the hallway seem even narrower as she murmured, “Am I distracting you now, Sean? Is that why you seem so convinced?”

When they hit a small swell, he braced his hand against the wall beside her head and bit back desire. “Just do as I ask, Svala. I don’t need any trouble, okay? Not with my men.” He ground his jaw. “This is my livelihood. Please don’t screw it up.”

Shockingly enough, Svala looked as though he’d slapped her. “That’s not why I’m here, Sean…” She trailed off, clearly upset before she gathered herself. “I just wanted to see you fish.”

“Commercial fishing isn’t like normal fishing.” He shook his head. “There’s not much to see, really.”

Except when the nets came up. That feeling of excitement and expectation before they found out how big a load they’d caught.

He had no idea what to make of the look on her face. She was vulnerable in a way he’d never seen her. “I’m sorry,” he murmured, not sure what to say, still confused about why she hadn’t already traveled back in time. “Maybe I can take you out fishing another time?”

“Maybe,” she said softly, her eyes alarmingly gentle as she stepped close. “So how are you going to keep me entertained while you hide me away?”

Ah, there she was. The little Viking he knew so well. Except he wasn’t doing what he always had.

He wasn’t stepping away.

Something about having her on one of his boats, on his turf, on the high sea…was different. Somehow, though it was on his territory, they had found common ground. The sway of a ship. The pulse of the ocean beneath them.

“Sean,” she whispered, clearly sensing a crack in the wall he’d kept between them. Slowly, inch by inch, she unzipped his jacket. “If I understand things correctly, you aren’t needed for hours yet. Why don’t we fill in that time in a pleasurable way, yes?”
